10$ a week for grocery?

A fellow blogger had me wondering with his claim of spending 10$ a week on grocery. Ok this is only for 1 person but even 40$ for a family of 4 seems very little even considering the saving for buying and cooking in "bulk". The Hillbilly housewife has written a now famous 45$ "emergency menu" and 70$ "low cost menu" that feed 4-6 persons for a week. There is also the infamous Hungry for a month experiment where the guy didn't really feed himself for 1$ a day, he basically starved himself for the same amount.

However could a reasonable person eat enough healthy food (Ramen excluded) for about 1$ a day? I wonder....

I'm pretty frugal, but I won't put my family on a rice, bean, ramen diet or make a can of tuna feed the whole family. I guess it could be done, but unless that was literally ALL YOU HAD, I wouldn't subject my family to it. Heck, I thought I was doing good only using $70 a week for groceries (seeing that that covers household needs and toiletry items as well)

I just posted a response on my blog answering your question. I also ate on $1 a day for one month

however, I was already pretty close to this, so I wasn't actually "starving" myself. I will let you read my response, without retyping it here.

Hope the response answer all your questions.
